H, E, I or A – what body type are you?

Every person is unique – but sometimes it is helpful to define different body shapes. Depending on height, weight, and physique, there are four types: H, E, I, and A. By knowing your own body shape, you can find the right mattress. However, there are also mattresses that provide equal support for different or even all body types. It's best to keep this in mind when purchasing.

The HEIA classification

The HEIA classification is based on the appearance of the letters that describe the different body shapes. Type H resembles a solid "H", type E a large and strong "E", type I a slender "I", and type A a wider "A".

TYPE -H

⁃ Tall, broad stature
⁃ Shoulders, chest and abdomen balanced and strong
⁃ Narrow hips
⁃ Abdomen larger than buttocks

➔ Heavy, cabinet-shaped person

TYPE -E

⁃ Tall, rather compact body type
⁃ Shoulders wider than hips
⁃ Buttocks and abdomen not well developed

➔ Tall, strong person

HEIA body type classification - Type E

TYPE -I

⁃ Small to medium size, slender body
⁃ Hips and shoulders approximately the same width
⁃ Buttocks and abdomen not well developed

➔ Small, light person

HEIA body type classification - Type I

TYPE -A

⁃ Small to medium stature
⁃ Narrow shoulders and slender waist
⁃ Rather large buttocks and thighs

➔ Small, curvy person

HEIA body type classification - Type A

Are you more of an H, E, I or A type? Do you recognize yourself? The majority of people can classify themselves into one of the existing categories. In addition to the pure H, E, I or A types, there are hybrids that exhibit characteristics from various types. Body shape varies from person to person. Simply choose the type that most closely resembles you. If you hesitate between two body shapes, it is best to choose a mattress that suits both.

HEIA as a guide when buying a mattress

The HEIA typology is useful, for example, when buying a new mattress. Depending on your body type, certain conditions must be met for a restful sleep. Short, light people, i.e., types I and A, have the best chances when buying a mattress. They do not sink as deeply into the sleeping surface during sleep, making it easier for the mattress to fulfill its supportive function. For tall, heavy people, however, the mattress has more work to do. At night, the muscles relax and barely support the skeletal system, especially the spine. The sleeping surface must provide balance, otherwise it becomes uncomfortable.

A mattress that does not fit properly can cause back pain and other problems. For example, if a heavy person of type H lies on their side, the mattress must compensate for the differences between the pelvis, waist, and shoulders. Otherwise, it will result in a cramped sleeping position, which has negative effects on the entire body. The same applies to a person of type A with a wide pelvis. The different body widths press the mattress to different degrees.

Good sleep for everyone!

Many mattresses are suitable for short and light people, but not for tall and heavy people. A good mattress should provide the best possible support for all HEIA types.
